Gatirima factory is affiliated to Kibugu Farmers Cooperative society along with four other coffee factories. It is located in one of Kenya’s great coffee-growing regions, Embu County. There are now 1,100 active members averaging around one hectare of land. Producers also grow tea, corn, bananas, gravellea, macadamia, and eucalyptus.
The factory uses a disc pulper to remove the fruit from the inner parchment layer. Coffee cherry is fully washed and sundried on raised beds. Drying can take up to 15 days, while continuous sorting and hand turning of parchment takes place.
