One of the most unique and coveted coffees in the world, Alto Inambari comes to us from Sandia province in the Puno region along the shores of Lake Titicaca.
Alto Inambari is the main district of Sandia. Its name comes from the fact that it is the highest part through which the Inambari river passes—and it is really high, with elevations reaching as high as 3000 masl. It is these heights and the richness of these lands that produce the phenomenal quality we see out of Alto Inambari.
The larger region of Sandia’s tropical climate features favorable temperatures and an altitude of 1600+ masl, making it home to some of the most uniquely special coffees of Puno along with a host of local flora and fauna.
Puno itself is characterized by varied landscapes that range from deep, warm jungle to the highest, iciest mountains of the Andes. The city of Puno is also the fifth highest city in the world at almost 4,000 masl. In these variations we find a diversity of highly fertile soil even at very low temperatures, with a high variety of minerals.
As a coffee region to which Red Fox has been dedicated since our roots, Puno hosts a wide variety of logistical challenges ranging from its extreme remoteness and inaccessibility to poor leadership and lack of consistent infrastructure for bringing these coffees to market, leading many to stop growing coffee in favor of the less challenging and often more lucrative coca. However, these coffees are precious and we work hard every year to make sure they find buyers who appreciate how important it is that they continue to exist and turn a profit for their producers.
